GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNT sophomore Amelia Sharp won her first individual American Conference Championship medal on Saturday on the final day of the meet with a silver medal in the Platform diving competition with a personal best score of 240.60 to add to her two Team Diving gold medals from this year's meet and last year.
Senior Kamryn Wong took bronze in the event - her first Platform medal at the meet - to give her seven total conference medals in her two seasons with the Mean Green. It was her fourth medal of the meet. In total, the divers (Sharp, Wong and junior Sydney Guidara) collected seven medals, including a successful defense of their Team Diving championship from a year ago.
"That was an unbelievable night for this group," associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "Given the circumstances of this season and the fact that we had less tower training than a year ago, I'm honestly blown away by how they responded. They stepped up to the challenge with incredible energy, embraced the moment, and competed fearlessly all day long. To put three divers into the A-Final was a huge accomplishment in itself. Amelia finishing second with a zone cut and a new personal best, Kamryn earning bronze and another zone cut, and Sydney placing sixth — that speaks to their preparation and composure. And for Gabi to C-Final and post a PR, as well, shows the depth and momentum across the board.
"Two medals on tower was an amazing and honestly unexpected result, but it's a credit to the way this team continues to rise when it matters most. I couldn't be more proud of their effort and the way they supported each other through every round and each day of these championships."
O'Callaghan was named the American's Co-Diving Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the meet.
In the pool, the Mean Green got a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle C-Final from Scarlett McCloud and a runner-up showing from Vivian Anderson, while Maria Jose Sanchez Castro finished seventh in the 200 breaststroke C-Final.
