COLLEGE STATION, Texas — UNT senior Kamryn Wong made program history on Tuesday, becoming the first UNT diver to ever qualify for the NCAA Championships, as she placed eighth in the 3-meter springboard final at the NCAA Zone D Championships, where the top 10 finishers advanced to the national meet, which is set for March 18-21, in Atlanta.
Wong qualified seventh in the Zone D final with a preliminary score of 323.70, before finishing with a combined score of 616.15. She will compete at the NCAA Championships for the second time in her career, after she went in both the 1- and 3-meter events as a sophomore at Missouri before transferring to UNT prior to her junior season.
"Years of work and dedication have gone into this sport, and as my career nears its end, I'm really proud to have accomplished this and to represent UNT and the people who have supported me along the way," Wong said.
Wong's 12th-place finish in Monday's 1-meter springboard final — one spot shy of automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championship in that event — will allow her to compete in the 1-meter in Atlanta, after all, as well as the 3-meter.
"To become the first diver in UNT history to qualify for NCAAs on both boards is really special," said associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan. "It's a testament to the years of work she's put into this sport. I couldn't be happier to see her earn the opportunity to represent our program at the national championship.
"This zone is an absolute gauntlet — the depth and level of talent here is incredible — so for Kam to come through and qualify in both the 1-meter and 3-meter is a huge accomplishment," O'Callaghan said. "She had an outstanding prelims and then did exactly what you need to do at a meet like this: stay composed, stay consistent, and trust her dives in finals. Finishing eighth in that field to secure an NCAA spot is something she should be incredibly proud of."
The 1-meter national championship is set for Thursday, March 19, while the 3-meter event will be contested the next day at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
