DENTON – The UNT men's basketball team earned a first-round bye in the 2026 American Men's Basketball Championship as they are the six seed in the 10-team tournament played at Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Birmingham, Alabama, March 11-15.
With the first-round bye, North Texas doesn't play its first tournament game until Thursday at 8 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on KHYI 95.3 FM and on ESPNU. The Mean Green await the winner of No. 7 Florida Atlantic and No. 10 Temple who face off the day before. UNT beat both teams during the regular season.
Under leadership of new head coach Daniyal Robinson, the Mean Green went 9-9 in conference play, which put them in a three-way tie for fifth place in the American Conference standings. It is the highest a first-year North Texas head coach has finished in their respective conference standings since 1994 when then new UNT head coach Tim Jankovich also led the Mean Green to a 9-9 record in the Southland Conference but a fourth-place finish in the standings.
Through conference tiebreaker rule, UNT was placed as the six seed in this year's conference tournament.
North Texas has won at least one conference tournament game every year since 2019, however, is aiming to reach the title game for the first time since the 2021 Conference USA Tournament.
