DENTON, Texas - Three Mean Green divers are in College Station preparing for the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships, which will begin Monday and run through Wednesday with spots in the NCAA Championships on the line.
Senior Kamryn Wong, junior Sydney Guidara and sophomore Amelia Sharp will compete in the event at Texas A&M, looking to become the first diving athletes from UNT to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which is scheduled for March 18-21 in Atlanta.
Guidara will compete in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events, while Sharp will compete in the 1-meter springboard and the Platform. Wong qualified in all three events but will only compete in the two springboard events with Guidara.
"Zones is always one of the toughest meets of the year," said associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan. "With around 60 divers competing for just 10 or 11 qualifying spots in each event, you're truly going up against the best of the best in the region. That said, I feel like our team is prepared for the opportunity. Every step along the way this season — the bigger invitationals we attended, Winter Nationals, and conference championships — has helped prepare them to compete at a high level against top competition.
"Our focus is continuing the approach that's worked well for us all year — staying present, trusting their preparation, and supporting each other as a team. When this group competes with that kind of energy and cohesion, they tend to perform at their best. We're excited for the opportunity, proud of what they've accomplished to get here, and ready to enjoy the experience together."
The top 11 performers in the 1-meter springboard and Platform, as well as the top 10 in 3-meter springboard, will move on to the NCAA Championships.
