DENTON, Texas – UNT women's basketball players Megan Nestor and Aysia Proctor collected several American Conference postseason honors, the league office announced Monday morning.
After a historic first season at the Division I level, Nestor was named Defensive Player of the Year alongside East Carolina's Kennedy Fauntleroy and earned placements on the All-Conference First Team, All-Newcomer Team and All-Defensive Team. She joins Rosalyn Reades (2002, Sun Belt) as the only players in program history to win their conference's Defensive Player of the Year award and gives North Texas an All-Conference First Team selection in four straight seasons.
Nestor completed the regular season as the league's only player averaging a double double at 12.8 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. She leads the nation in nearly every major rebounding category and broke both the UNT and American Conference single-season rebounding records with 435 thus far. Additionally, her 19 double doubles are most in the league and rank top 10 in the NCAA.
Her impact is also felt on the defensive end, snatching a team-high 46 steals and blocking 18 shots on the year. Nestor's steal total is the highest among all forwards or centers in the conference, and she is one of just four American players with at least 46 steals and 18 blocks this season.
Meanwhile, Proctor was selected to the All-Conference Second Team, making UNT one of three programs with multiple First or Second Team honorees. Proctor led the team in scoring at 13.9 points per game and shot an impressive 38.6% from behind the arc, marks that improved to 15.4 and 42.0% during conference play, respectively. She also reached double figures 20 times throughout the season, including five 20-point outings against league opponents.
The Mean Green received a bye into the second round of American Conference Championship as the fifth seed and will face the winner of No. 8 Charlotte and No. 9 Florida Atlantic on Wednesday at noon CT.
