BROOKSVILLE, Florida – The UNT women's golf team fell one shot shy of its best-ever finish at the American Conference Championship.
The Mean Green ended the three-day 11-team event on Wednesday in sixth place with a three-round score of 893 (+29) but was just one stroke from a program record fourth-place finish. On Wednesday North Texas had its best round of this year's event as they shot a 293 (+5) to propel themselves up two positions.
Senior Malisone Chanthapanya ended the championship with a team-best score of 220 (+4), which was good enough for a seventh-place finish on the player leaderboard. It's her fourth top 10 finish of the year.
"I'm certainly disappointed in our first round but I like the fight the ladies showed in rounds two and three," said head coach Michael Akers. "Kat stepped in as a substitute and certainly saved us shots. Marin came back in the lineup today and had a very solid round. I don't want three days to take away from the overall year. We were right on the NCAA bubble which is a great accomplishment. Our goal next year will be to be firmly inside the bubble so we don't have the pressure of having to win conference to advance to regional. We are very appreciative of our seniors. Malisone's decision to play a fifth year for us really had a positive impact."
After the tough first round to the championship on Monday that saw the Mean Green shoot a 306 (+18) and sit in 10th place, UNT dug its way out with the event's third-best score over the final two rounds.
North Texas shot a 587 (+11) over the final two rounds. Only the event's champion Tulsa and runner-up Charlotte were better over the final two rounds.
The Mean Green's Chanthapanya was the last on her team to finish the round Wednesday. UNT needed her shoot a one-under par on her final two holes for the Mean Green to finish the championship in a tie for fourth place. The senior bogeyed the first of her final two holes — a par three — and then birdied her final hole.
UNT finished one stroke behind East Carolina and Florida Atlantic who each shot a 892 (+28) and finished in the tie for fourth place.
The Mean Green entered the conference championship ranked 61st in the nation, just outside making the NCAA Regional as an at-large.
