CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Mean Green soccer team went on the road to rainy Charlotte on Thursday to face one of the perceived early contenders in the American Conference and left with a 3-0 loss in both teams' second conference match.

Charlotte (5-4-0, 1-1-0) opened the scoring in the 14th minute when UNT goalkeeper Sarah Margaret Seabrook couldn't hold on to an initial shot from the 49ers, who were able to corral the rebound and put it in the back of the net. Twenty minutes later, Charlotte scored from just in front of the goal to give the 49ers a 2-0 halftime lead. The 49ers rounded out the scoring in the 78th minute on a world-class strike that Seabrook made a valiant effort on. Seabrook tied her career high with seven saves.

The Mean Green's reserves saw a lot of minutes to close the first half and open the second half, and UNT (4-4-2, 0-1-1) had a few good chances, most notably on a header from freshman Alexa Perreira that was punched over the crossbar by Charlotte's keeper. UNT played the match without its senior leader, midfielder Mia Bernard, who was shown a red card in last week's 1-1 draw with South Florida.

"I'm disappointed in the way my starters came out tonight, but very proud of our second group for how hard they fought and stepped up," head coach John Hedlund said. "We've got to clean this up fast. Coming into tonight, we had a long history with Charlotte and held a 7-3-2 record against them — with a few of those wins having championships on the line. If my starters aren't going to give me the energy and passion required, I will sub the whole team out, and that's exactly what I did. Knowing the leaders on this team, we will be ready for Sunday.

"It was a challenge without Mia on the field, but we'll have our top midfielder back and be at full strength this Sunday."

UNT will return to Denton to face Temple on Sunday at 1 p.m., at John Hedlund Field at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium. The Mean Green will celebrate Senior Day and honor their alumni.
