Mean Green Falls In Extra Innings

FRESNO, CA (3/14/04)- The North Texas softball team forced extra innings, but Utah homered in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-0 victory on Sunday morning in the final day of action at the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic.
North Texas (7-31) went 0-6 in the Fresno tournament, while facing three nationally-ranked teams.
Up until the eighth inning, freshman pitcher Katy Maxey had not given up a run, while spreading out four hits. Offensively, the Mean Green managed only two hits in the game, a double by Maxey and a base hit by junior Brittiny Chapman.
In the top of the eighth, Utah used two singles and three-run home run to go ahead, 4-0. The Mean Green was unable to score the runner placed at second in its final at bats.
Sophomore Kelei Walker and junior Stephanie Cranmer led the Mean Green in the tournament with five hits each. Walker went 2-for-3 with a double in the 1-0 loss to Long Beach State, while Cranmer posted a 3-for-3 performance iagainst San Diego State.
Maxey started all six contests in the tournament for the Mean Green and has been the starting pitcher for the last 18 games.
North Texas finishes up its 18-game road trip with a non-tournament doubleheader against Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, March 16. The first pitch is at 3 pm.
