Huntsville, Texas (2/12/06) Sophomore Katya Muller exploded for eight RBI in two games and posted her first hit of the season in the 9-6 victory against Louisiana Tech at the Domino’s Pizza Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Mean Green lost its second game of the day, 14-7, against host school, Sam Houston State.
The Mean Green (2-2) defeated Louisiana Tech for the second straight day, but fell again to Sam Houston State, 14-7. Muller tied the game at 7-7 against Sam Houston State after hitting her first grand slam of her career. Sam Houston State responded with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the victory and the tournament championship.
For the second game in a row, Louisiana Tech scored the first run of the game in the first inning. North Texas was held scoreless until the fourth inning when it scored seven runs off seven hits and one error. Juniors Susan Waters and Christen Jonse each posted two hits in the one inning. Waters started the inning off with a single and then posted an RBI double in her second at-bat. Jonse posted a RBI double in her first at-bat of the inning, scoring Waters, and then followed it up with an RBI single. Waters posted her first multi-hit game of the season, while Jonse recorded three hits in a single game for the first time in her career.
Muller posted three RBI in the big fourth inning with a triple. It was her first triple of the season and the fourth in her career. Junior Heather Bostic also knocked a run in during the same inning. Bostic and Monica Garcia were the only North Texas players to post at least one hit in each of the four games this weekend.
Sophomore Kristina Fowler earned her second win of the season with a complete-game outing against Louisiana Tech. She is 2-0 in two starts for the Mean Green.
Muller bested her earlier performance with a 3-for-4 outing in the loss against Sam Houston State. She became the first North Texas player to knock in five RBI in a single game and was only the third Mean Green player to post two home runs in a single game.
Muller scored the first run in the first inning against SHS with a single. North Texas took an early 2-0 lead, but Sam Houston State quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first inning. The host team took a 7-2 lead in the fourth inning with five runs off six hits and one Mean Green error.
A solo home run by Muller in the fifth inning put the score at 7-3. The sophomore shortstop followed that up with a grand slam in the sixth inning that tied the game at 7-7. The grand slam was the first in the new era of Mean Green softball.
The Mean Green, unfortunately, was not able to hold the lead and left two runners stranded in the top of the seventh.
North Texas opens its home portion of the schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 15 against Texas State. The first pitch is set for 3 pm at Denia Park off Fort Worth Drive in Denton.
