DENTON (4/23/06) - Junior Susan Waters hit her 15th home run of the season in a 21-9 loss to No. 13 Louisiana-Lafayette softball team on Sunday afternoon at Denia Park.
The Mean Green (18-30, 1-8 Sun Belt) was swept for the third straight year by the Ragin’ Cajuns (39-8, 7-2) who hold a 13-0 record against North Texas.
Louisiana-Lafayette exploded for 12 runs on seven hits off three Mean Green pitchers in the top of the first inning. The Ragin’ Cajuns went on to score 21 runs in a combined five innings off 17 hits. The 17 hits is the most given up by the Mean Green in the history of the program. NT has given up 16 hits in a game twice this season.
The 12 opponent runs in a one inning ties a record set in 2004 by Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders scored 12 runs off eight hits in the fourth inning of a 16-2 Mean Green loss on April 18. The 21 runs is the most allowed by the Mean Green in the three-year history of the program. The largest margin of defeat is 14 runs, set by Middle Tennessee in the 16-2 decision.
The Ragin’ Cajuns used four home runs to lead their offense, including two by Ashley Evans.
The Mean Green offense scored nine runs against Lousiana-Lafayette, the most NT has ever recorded against the Ragin’ Cajuns. Sophomore Kristina Fowler hit her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning to cut into Louisiana’s lead by two, 12-2.
Sophomore Katya Muller knocked in two more runs in the second inning with a single. She went 2-for-4 in the game and went 4-for-10 in the series against Louisiana-Lafayette. Waters hit her three-run long ball in the fourth inning, increasing her total to 15 this season and two this week.
Sophomore Taylor Johnston posted a two-RBI double in the seventh to give North Texas nine runs in the game. Freshman Sarah Jones went 3-for-3 in the game, including a double.
The Mean Green honored its lone senior, Kelei Walker, before the game. She has started1 68 games in her three years at North Texas and leads the program in walks, steals and sacrifice hits. She did not play this weekend due to a knee injury suffered last Wednesday against Stephen F. Austin.
North Texas finishes its season on the road, beginning on Thursday, April 27 when it faces Baylor at 6 pm in Waco.
