Mean Green Loses Home Opener

DENTON (2/21/07) - The North Texas softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Nicholls State in the Mean Green’s home opener at Lovelace Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Mean Green lost by scores of 10-3 and 4-3.
The Mean Green (3-10) has lost seven straight and now trails the series with the Colonels, 3-1. NT is 0-2 in its new stadium at the Mean Green Village.
"We opened up the season at Las Cruces and looked wonderful," said North Texas head coach Kelly Burns. "Since last week, there is not one part of our game that is going well. It’s frustrating. There is not one part of our game that we are executing well. The good news is that we have seven days to fix this."
Nicholls State’s Ashley Martin hit a pinch-hit home run in the sixth inning of the second game to break a 3-3 tie and give the Colonels the win. Leah Peterson posted a two-run long ball in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Kristina Fowler gave the Mean Green a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single. The junior lost her fifth game in the circle despite allowing just one earned run. She gave up six hits over five and two-thirds innings.
Katya Muller knocked in NT’s third run in the second game with a double down the left field line. The junior shortstop recorded three hits and two RBI in the combined two games.
Nicholls State outhit the Mean Green, 15-7, in the opening game. The Colonels scored early runs and then sealed the win with four runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Senior Susan Waters hit her team-leading fourth home run, the first for the Mean Green in the new stadium, in the sixth inning. The two-run shot put NT with three runs of the lead, 6-3, before the Colonels added four in the final inning.
Waters and Muller each posted two hits in the opening game.
North Texas returns to action on Thursday, March 1 when it faces Oklahoma on the road at 5 pm.
