Big Second Half Downs Cameron 87-66 In Season Opener

DENTON, Texas (11-14-08) The North Texas men’s basketball team outscored the Cameron Aggies 43-27 in the second half to help pull away for a 87-66 victory in the season opener in front of 1,792 boisterous fans at the Snake Pit Friday evening.
North Texas (1-0) had four players in double-digits, led by a team-high 13 points from sophomore Tristan Thompson. Sophomore point guard Josh White had 12 points, seven of which came in the first half. Adam McCoy and Justin Howerton scored 11 and 10 points respectively.
Overall the Mean Green shot 55 percent from the field, including 8-of-17 from three-point territory (47 percent) as they improved to 5-0 all-time against the Aggies and 49-42 all-time in season openers.
Cameron (0-0) had four players in double-figures, led by Dylan Gilliam’s 16 points.
Both teams shot the ball extremely well in the game’s first 20 minutes. North Texas shot an outrageous 62 percent from the field and connected on 4-of-8 from three-point territory. However, Cameron refused to go away and shot 51 percent in the first half and was led by Kallan Glasgow’s 10 points.
White hit a running floater at the buzzer as time expired in the first half, sending North Texas into the locker room with a 44-39 lead, their largest lead of the first half. White along with Thompson led the Mean Green with seven points a piece in the first half.
North Texas opened the second half with an 8-0 run and never looked back. Their lead grew as big as 26 points when White in a three pointer in transition to give the Mean Green an 81-55 advantage with 5:32 left in the second half.
Defensively North Texas held the Aggies to only 22 percent shooting in the second half.
The Mean Green also improved to 16-8 in season openers at the Snake Pit, which was home for North Texas from 1950-1973.
Next up for the Mean Green will be a battle in Stillwater against Oklahoma State on Monday, Nov.17 at 7 p.m. Last season North Texas beat the Cowboys 82-73 in Denton.
