DENTON, Texas (3/409) The North Texas softball team split a doubleheader with Stephen F. Austin, winning the first game, 3-1, but falling in the nightcap, 9-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.

“I thought the first game went well,” said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard. “Ashley did a good job, and we hit all the way around. We just didn’t focus in on that second inning in the second game. We fought back and kept playing, but the errors hurt us.”
North Texas scored three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead from the Lady Jacks in the first game. SFA came back and took a 8-0 lead in the second game, and the Mean Green was uable to recover from the large deficit.
Ashley Lail (4-2) picked up the win in the first game, pitching seven innings and allowing just four hits. The junior struck out six SFA batters. The Lady Jacks took the 1-0 lead in the fifth off a Mean Green error.
After Mallory Cantler started the sixth inning with a single, Sarah Jones tied the game with an RBI double. Rebecca Waters gave North Texas the lead with a two-RBI double. Waters is tied for the team lead with five doubles, while Jones is second with four. Both Cantler and Waters posted two hits in the opening win.
The Lady Jacks scored eight runs off three hits in the second inning of the nightcap. SFA was aided by two Mean Green errors. The Mean Green responded with a solo home run by Cantler in the bottom of the inning. Cantler leads the team with four homers. NT cut into the lead some more in the third inning with three doubles. Courtney Bradshaw led off the inning with a two-base hit and was knocked home by Kadie Platt’s double. Megan Rupp knocked in a second run with her first double of the season.
Cantler and Lisa Johnson posted RBI singles in the fifth inning to add to NT’s total. North Texas and SFA both posted 10 hits in the nightcap and both teams left four runners stranded on base.
