Mean Green Softball Defeats Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas (4/8/09) The North Texas softball team continued its winning ways against Texas Tech with a 6-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field. The Mean Green has won the last three meetings against the Red Raiders, including two on the road.
The Mean Green improves to 21-18 overall, while the Red Raiders fall to 13-30. North Texas takes a 3-2 lead in the series against Texas Tech. NT also improves to 4-5 this season against Big XII teams.
“I think this win puts us back on track,” said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard. “We were able to get a few more hits and baserunners today. I was also glad to see us hit a home run. We hadn’t hit one in a few days so it was good to see Mariza hit one out.”
The Mean Green took an early 3-0 lead, and Mariza Martinez sealed the win with a three-run homer in the fourth. Kayla Lawson picked up her sixth win of the season, pitching a complete game. She gave up one run off six hits. The junior has won three of her last four starts.
The Mean Green took a 3-0 lead in the second inning off two hits and a Red Raiders error. Caitlin Grimes brought home the first runner with a bases-loaded walk. She came in as a pinch hitter. Kadie Platt followed with an RBI single, scoring Jennifer Smith who reached base with a single. Megan Rupp knocked in the third run with a sacrifice fly. Rupp posted two hits in the game.
Texas Tech responded in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run. With runners on first and second, North Texas ended the inning with a double play.
The Mean Green added three more runs in the fourth. Courtney Bradshaw led off the inning with a base hit. With two outs, Rupp singled. Martinez knocked everyone home with her team-leading seventh home run of the season.
The Mean Green outhit the Red Raiders, 8-6.
North Texas returns to action on Friday, April 10 when the Mean Green resumes conference play with a three-game series against Troy. The Mean Green hosts Troy on Friday with a doubleheader at 4 pm.
