DENTON, Texas - North Texas men's basketball ran its home winning streak to 14 games Thursday night as it ran past UALR 81-69 at The Super Pit. The streak currently ranks 11th in the NCAA.
The Mean Green (12-2, 1-0) came out on fire early, making 61 percent of it's field goals in the first half and headed into the break with a 43-26 lead over the Trojans (8-7, 0-1). North Texas would finish the game with a shooting percentage of 59.6, which is the highest the team has registered this year.
"I thought we did a great job in getting off to a great start in conference play against one of the toughest teams in our league," North Texas head coach Johnny Jones. "UALR is an excellent defensive team, and I'm very excited to have gotten out of the gate so well against them."
Sophomore Ben Knox was the story of the first stanza as he recorded a career high in both points (9) and rebounds (6) in the opening 20 minutes. He would finish with nine points and seven rebounds.
The second half saw North Texas keep UALR from making a major run and put away the game from the free throw line, despite making only 67 percent of its shots from the charity stripe, after achieving the double bonus with nearly ten minutes left in the game.
Senior Josh White made his way into seventh place in Mean Green history in all-time scoring with his first bucket early in the first half. White finished with a team high 19 points, which brings his career total to 1,441.
The Trojans were led by pre-season All-Sun Belt point guard Solomon Bozeman with 23 points and no UALR player grabbed more than four rebounds.
The Mean Green's record of 12 wins in the first 14 games has matched is best record since 1952-53 when the Mean Green finished 18-4.
North Texas returns to the floor Saturday, January 1, when Louisiana-Lafayette invades the Super Pit. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m., or 30 minutes after the completion of the women's game.
