DENTON, Texas (3/25/10) - The University of North Texas softball team has moved its third annual Strikeout Cancer Game to Thursday, March 25 when the Mean Green faces UTSA at Lovelace Stadium at 6 p.m. This year's event will benefit the fight against ovarian cancer.
The Mean Green was forced to postpone its charity game yesterday after the North Texas/UTA game was moved to Arlington because of bad weather. The game was orginally scheduled to be played at Lovelace Stadium in Denton.
For the last three years, head coach T.J. Hubbard and the Mean Green softball team has dedicated a charity game to a specific type of cancer. The first year was breast cancer, last year was bone cancer and this year is ovarian cancer.
Admission is free in lieu of a cash donation. All proceeds generated from the gate and t-shirt sales will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Over the last two years, North Texas softball has donated over $4,000 to the American Cancer Society.
With its 2-0 win yesterday against UTA, North Texas improved its overall record to 11-9 and has tied last year's team for the best start in school history through 20 games.
The NCAA released its first national rankings for softball this season, and the Mean Green is listed in a few categories. As a team, North Texas is ranked 13th in home runs per game at 1.42. This does not include Mallory Cantler's solo home run last night against UTA. The Mean Green has hit 28 long balls this year. North Texas is also listed 40th in slugging percentage (.460).
Individually, Lisa Johnson is ranked 25th in home runs per game (.37). She leads the Mean Green with seven. She is also ranked 33rd in walks. She leads the team with 16 bases on balls.
