DENTON, Texas -- North Texas opened the 2010 season by erasing Texas Southern, 8-0 Friday night at North Texas Soccer Field. The Mean Green used a hat trick from freshman Kelsey Hodges, two goals from junior Julie Lackey, and one a piece from sophomores Ellen Scarfone and Shannon Gorrie , as well as senior Dani Watson to cruise to victory.
Lackey opened the floodgates with by scoring in the fourth minute on an assist from sophomore Scarfone in the game's fourth minute. Hodges found the back of the net for the first time in her young career on a breakaway in the 23th minute.
Scarfone got in on the action in the 29th minute with an assist from sophomore Alicia Reyes. Lackey closed the first half scoring just 70 seconds later with her second goal. It was the second multi-goal game of Lackey's career.
Hodges continued her hot start with a goal from five yards out in the 50th minute on assist from Lackey. Lackey's five points were a career best.
In the 59th minute, Gorrie scored unassisted from outside the box to push the score to 6-0. Hodges finished her impressive debut by completing her hat trick on a header from Scarfone, her second assist of the evening.
Lastly, Watson profited from an assist from Lacey Simpson with just 15 seconds left on the clock to complete the night's scoring.
North Texas thoroughly dominated ball control throughout the contest, out-shooting Texas Southern 37-2 and carrying a 22-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The Mean Green are back on action Sunday at 1 p.m. as they play host to Missouri State before heading to Las Cruces, N.M. for the Hotel Encato Aggie Classic versus Prairie View A&M and Jacksonville State next weekend.

North Texas improved to 11-5 all-time in season openers and 8-0 at home.
The Mean Green earned their fifth consecutive home victory. North Texas is now 82-7-5 at home since 2000.
The eight goals were the most since North Texas scored eight against Lamar on Sept. 7, 2007, a span of 60 matches.
Tonight was also the first time the Mean Green had two players with multi-goal games since the 7-0 blowout of ULM, when Kendall Juett netted a hat trick and Janaye Woods scored twice.
The Mean Green's eight goals accounted for 29.6 percent of the club's total of 27 from last year.
Sophomore defender Danielle Guilliod left the game in the first half with a left knee injury.
