Game Notes
ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington took advantage of a turnover prone North Texas basketball team and raced to a 97-64 win, which snapped the Mean Green’s two-game win streak over the Mavericks.
The Mavericks (3-0) used a 32-0 first-half run and 19 first-half turnovers – both highs in the Johnny Jones era – to top the Mean Green (1-2). The 33 point loss is NT’s largest since Arkansas downed the Mean Green by 35 in January of 2004.
For the second straight game freshman Chris Jones was the leading scorer for North Texas, this time with 20 points. The Garland, Texas product poured in 31 against Texas Tech last week.
North Texas had taken the last two meetings with UTA, but the Mean Green still lead the overall series 30-22.
Jordan Williams opened the game with a 3-point play on a quick drive to the bucket, but Mavericks responded with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes that saw NT commit seven turnovers. Trey Norris stopped the bleeding with 3-pointer from the right baseline with 14:20 on the clock.
That’s when the Mavericks laid on the accelerator with a 35-0 run that saw them lead by as many as 42 in the half. UTA shot 61.1 percent from the floor and 50 percent from deep in the first.
The Mean Green responded well in the second half, and cut into the UTA lead. NT outscored the Mavericks 46-42 and shot 57.1 percent in the second half. Jordan Williams tallied 13 second half points and ended the night with 17 – his second game with at least 16 this year.
Next up for the Mean Green will be No. 24 Mississippi State, who recently won the 2K Sports Classic title over Arizona, on the road in Starkville, Miss.
