DENTON, Texas - Proving that he's one of the top basketball players in the nation, North Texas forward Tony Mitchell is headed to Colorado Springs, Colo. to try out for the USA Basketball U19 World Championships team.
The former No. 12 recruit in the country is one of 21 players invited to the training camp, which will whittle down to 12 players that will compete for their country in the World Championships in Latvia from June 30 to July 10.
This isn't Mitchell's first go-around with the junior national team. The 6-8 Dallas product won the gold medal at the FIBA Americas tournament last summer, averaging 8.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
The final 12-man roster is expected to be announced June 24 following the training camp.
When that roster is announced, Mitchell might not be the only member of the Mean Green Nation slated to compete at the World Championships. Nikola Stojiljkovic, who signed with North Texas last weekend, is among the final 16 players remaining at the French National Team camp.
Stojiljkovic, a 6-9 forward from Paris, France, has experience with the U18 and U16 French National squads, averaging 5.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game at the 2009 European Championships.
