Softball Caps Regular Season On Saturday

DENTON, Texas (5/4/12) - The North Texas softball team caps its regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5 at 3 p.m. The Mean Green will honor its five seniors in between the two games.
With the 3-2 win against Stephen F. Austin, North Texas (24-24-1) won its fourth straight game. The four straight wins ties a season best. The school record for consecutive wins is seven.
Maddelyn Fraley has recorded one of the best single seasons in North Texas softball history. In 2012, she has led the team in batting average, home runs, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Her 11 home runs is tied for third for most home runs in a single season and her 40 RBI is fourth. She is second on the team with 23 walks, which is tied for third in a single-season. She is ranked in the conference and nationally in home runs and RBI. She was named Sun Belt Player of the Week on April 16.
Caitlin "Curly" Grimes has been a familiar presence behind the plate for the last four years. She was a four-year starter who has started every game this season for the Mean Green. She saved the best for last, having the best year of her career in 2012. She set personal bests this year in hits, home runs and RBI. She is sixth in career home runs and seventh in career RBI. Curly was named to the Fairfield Inn And Suites All-Tournament Team and was named Sun Belt Conference Co-Player of the Week.
Lisa Johnson has been a fixture at second base the last four years, missing just five games. She was a four-year starter who will be known for her patience at the plate and her ability to knock in runs and hit the long ball. She is listed in the top five in most of North Texas' offensive categories. She set the single-season walk record twice and holds the career record at 103, more than 40 above the person in second. She is ranked in the top five in runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and total bases. She moved into third place in career home runs on Wednesday with 28.
Megan Rupp has been a fixture in the outfield the last four years, missing just seven games. She was a four-year starter who will be known for her presence at the top of the lineup and her speed around the bases. She holds the career stolen base record, is fifth in career runs scored, seventh in career hits, tied for second in triples and fifth in fielding percentage. She has finished her senior season strong, tying or surpassing many of her career bests.
Jessica Shields has been a familiar face on the Mean Green team the last four years. She walked onto the team as a freshman and worked her way to becoming a scholarship player. She is the go-to-pinch runner for the Mean Green and the No. 1 uniform emerging out of the dugout nearly every game is a familiar one. She has scored eight runs this season and the first RBI's of her career were against Loyola-Chicago.
North Texas will find out its seeding for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Sunday. The Mean Green is currently in fourth place.
