SAN ANTONIO, Texas - North Texas head coach Tony Benford constantly preaches for his players to keep things simple on the court. Make the easy pass. Take the simple shot.
On Saturday afternoon, his Mean Green squad will have the opportunity to keep things simple in the standings, but the task will be far from easy. North Texas can guarantee itself the No. 6 seed in next week's C-USA Tournament with a win at UTSA.
That's the simple part. A loss to the Roadrunners in Saturday's regular-season finale can make things complicated in a hurry.
Five teams are within a game of the Mean Green in the C-USA standings, which means a loss could send North Texas tumbling as far as 11th place. Middle Tennessee, Rice, FIU, UTSA and Marshall would love nothing more than to pass NT.
UTSA is riding a season-long five game losing streak after dropping a 76-74 decision against Rice on Thursday night. Keon Lewis led four UTSA players in double-figures with 22 points.
UTSA leads C-USA and ranks 25th nationally with 13.1 offensive rebounds per game. Kaj-Bjorn Sherman is the biggest culprit with 2.8 per game, which ranks sixth in the league and 80th in the NCAA.
In the last meeting with UTSA on Jan 4, NT saw its offense dry up over the final six minutes, and UTSA took advantage in a 71-61 loss at the Super Pit. Jordan Williams led four NT players in double-figures with 17 points and six rebounds.
