DENTON — Mean Green soccer junior defender and captain Dominique James was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
This is James' third Defensive Player of the Week honor this season. She is the only person to win it more than once. As a team, UNT has now won the award four times and is the only school to win it more than once.
"It's a tremendous honor," James said. "I'm thankful for the league for recognizing our hard work and I'm excited for our team as these were two big wins for us in our drive for a fifth straight championship."
James led a Mean Green team to a pair of victories this weekend, including a very important 2-1 victory over Florida Atlantic on Friday that put UNT in the driver's seat to winning the regular season conference championship. James played all 180 minutes and led UNT to its 10th shutout of the season on Sunday versus FIU. On Friday versus FAU, James and the Mean Green defense shut out the Owls in the second-half to help the offense score the eventual game-winner.
The Mean Green own the nation's second-best goals-against average and need to win just one of their last two matches to claim the conference championships.
North Texas heads to Middle Tennessee on Wednesday to play a postponed match with the Blue Raiders.
