DENTON – North Texas women's basketball hosts No. 11/8 Texas Monday at 7 p.m. inside The Pit.
About the Mean Green (1-0, 0-0 C-USA)
UNT opened the 2018-19 season with a dominant 82-35 win over Mid-America Christian Nov. 3 inside The Super Pit. Redshirt senior Terriell Bradley led all scorers with 19 points. Freshman Charlene Shepherd was impactful in her Mean Green debut with 15 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Trena Mims registered 12 points and eight boards. The UNT defense held the Evangels to 17-percent shooting from the field and collected 60 rebounds along with a dozen steals.
Bradley was named to the 2018-19 Conference USA Women's Basketball Preseason Team, and UNT was chosen to finish seventh in the 14-team league by a vote of the C-USA head coaches.
About the Longhorns (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)
No. 11/8 Texas recorded a 78-41 season-opening win over Duquesne Thursday at home. Last season, the Longhorns compiled a 28-7 record and advanced to their fourth consecutive NCAA Sweet 16. The team finished second in the Big 12 Conference with a 15-3 mark and advanced to the championship game of the conference tournament.
Texas picked up a handful of conference preseason honors that included Lashann Higgs and Joyner Holmes being named to the All-Big 12 Team, while Jatarie White and Danni Williams earned Honorable Mention. Williams was also named the Preseason Newcomer of the Year, and Charli Collier was acknowledged as the Preseason Co-Freshman of the Year.

The Longhorns hold an 11-0 all-time advantage over the Mean Green. The series began during the 1978-79 season with Texas taking an 81-49 victory. The most recent meeting occurred Dec. 17, 2011, as UNT narrowly fell, 71-62. In that contest, the Mean Green held a 34-25 halftime lead before being outscored by 18 in the final 20 minutes. Laura McCoy posted a team-high 14 points, while Desiree Nelson added 13, and Brittney Hudson had 12.

AUSTIN, Texas (Dec. 17, 2011) - The North Texas bid to upset the No. 24 Texas Longhorns fell just short as the Longhorns fought off the Mean Green to win 71-62 at the Frank Erwin Center.
The Mean Green led the at the break over Texas by nine and stretched their lead to 13 points in the second half, but the Longhorns shot over 69 percent in the second half to come from behind for the win.
The Mean Green (7-5) opened the game down 11-5, but went ahead on a 3-pointer from Brittney Hudson 16-15 with 13:15 left in the first half. North Texas pushed their lead to double figures at 31-21 with a 15-6 run with 3:57 left in the half.
Laura McCoy, who finished the night with a career-high 14 points, hit three of her four 3-pointers in the first half and the Mean Green led 34-25 at the half.
A stunned Erwin Center crowd saw North Texas extend their lead to 46-33 on a Desiree Nelson 3-pointer with 14:23 left in the game, but that's when Texas (8-2) began their comeback. The Longhorns used a 17-4 run to tie the game up at 50-50 with 9:31 remaining fueled by Chassidy Fussell.
She scored 18 of her game-high 20 points in the second half and 10 of those points during the Longhorns run. Texas kept the pressure on as they used a 14-4 run to stretch their lead to 10 points at 64-54 with 5:04 remaining.
North Texas could not get any closer than seven points late in the game as the Longhorns held on for their third straight win.
Nelson finished the night with a season-high 13 points and Hudson had 11 points.
Mitchell, Aston together again in Denton
Head coaches Jalie Mitchell and Karen Aston will once again be on the same court, although for this contest the duo will be on opposite sidelines.
The relationship between the two began back during Mitchell's playing days at Duncanville High School where Aston, then an assistant coach at UNT, recruited Mitchell. While Mitchell went on to become the all-time leading scorer for the Mean Green, Aston headed to Austin to join the Longhorn coaching staff.
The pair reunited in Denton for the 2011-12 season when Aston took the UNT head coaching job and Mitchell joined her as an assistant. Following that season, Aston and Mitchell headed to UT in the same capacities and worked together for three seasons while taking the Longhorns to the Sweet 16 in 2015. Mitchell then became the eighth head coach for the Mean Green that April.
