Mims taking care of the ball
Trena Mims sits second in C-USA in assist-to-turnover ratio with her 39 helpers and 15 miscues. Seven of her turnovers have occurred between two contests, while Mims registered a game with zero mistakes in 26 minutes of play against Utah State Dec. 8 and has six games with only a single turnover.
She set a career-high in assists with nine versus Houston Baptist Dec. 5 and has twice dished out six. Her total against HBU is the third-best performance within C-USA this season.
Offense is key
With an even record of 5-5 on the season, the Mean Green have been steady defensively. In the UNT victories, the defense is allowing 62 points per game, whereas in the losses, the team is in fact giving up slightly less at 61.4.
With that, signs point to the importance of the offense in securing wins. The Mean Green are averaging 83.2 points in victories and have posted four contests of at least 82. In the losses, North Texas is mustering 50.4 points.
In addition to the scoring contrast, UNT outrebounds their opponents by nearly 10 boards in the wins, while in the losses the advantage is flipped in favor of the other team.
Non-con results
UNT enters the contest versus CSU Bakersfield hoping to jump above .500 with one more game remaining before league play begins. Dating to the 2015-16 season, the Mean Green are currently an even 22-21 in games occurring before the start of C-USA play. The team posted a mark of 9-3 in pre-conference play last season.
Doubling up
The Mean Green have compiled four double-doubles throughout the 2018-19 season with three coming from junior post Anisha George and the other by redshirt sophomore forward Madison Townley. George's trio of double-doubles ranks third in C-USA.
Throughout the entire 2017-18 season, the team amassed five, one each from current players Terriell Bradley and Micayla Buckner. Two seasons ago, six double-doubles were accomplished with half of them coming from Bradley.
Scoring ups and downs
While the Mean Green have remained fairly consistent on the defensive end this season, the offense has seen both breakout performances and well as its share of lulls. In the 100-75 win over Houston Baptist Dec. 5, UNT eclipsed the century mark for the first time in over 20 years as six Mean Green scored in double figures. The last time North Texas had scored 100 or more was Nov. 21, 1997, in a 116-39 victory over Texas Southern. The 100 totaled versus HBU was just the fifth occurrence in program history.
Three days later in the contest against Utah State, the offense did not come easy for North Texas in a 57-41 loss. Only the Mean Green starters entered the scoring column while the bench went scoreless as the team shot under 26-percent. The 41 points accrued against the Aggies was the lowest total since Dec. 4, 2015, in a three-point loss to Weber State, while the 25.9-percent shooting equaled the mark set Jan. 28, 2017, in a 62-47 defeat at Old Dominion.
Bradley enters top 10 in scoring
With her breakout career-high 40-point performance against NDSU Nov. 24, Terriell Bradley has continued to show her offensive prowess with 30 points at SMU Nov. 28 and 36 versus Missouri State Dec. 1. She has now elevated from 14thto eighth in the UNT career scoring charts with 1,171 points. Head Coach Jalie Mitchell's (1998-2002) record of sits at 1,764.
With 18 regular season games remaining, Bradley would need to average just under 33 points per game to reach Mitchell. If the Mean Green were to win three games in the postseason, the average slims down to 28.2 points. If Bradley continues her current 19.5 average throughout the regular season, she would move into third all-time with over 1,500 points.
Chart-topping Bradley
With 329 free throws made, Bradley sits in fourth place all-time in program history. She needs 36 more to tie Isalene Jones (1980-84) for third. Not out of sight is the No. 1 spot, held by Head Coach Jalie Mitchell who sank 411 throughout her career. Bradley made 164 from the line last season and now needs 82 to dethrone Mitchell, which comes out to be 4.5 makes per game throughout the remainder of the regular season.
Bradley is currently sixth all-time in 3-pointers made with 108. She is four away from the fifth spot, and Ashley Norris (1995-2000) occupies the top spot with 197.
Bring on the OT
The Mean Green have compiled a lowly 12-26 record throughout program history in overtime games, but following the 83-76 win over Missouri State Dec. 1, UNT has now strung together six straight victories involving extra periods. The win over the Bears was just the third time in program history UNT has found success inside The Super Pit in OT, as the team is now at 3-10 at home. Two seasons ago, North Texas pulled out wins in each of their four overtime contests, and went one-for-one in 2017-18.
