Division Leaders Square Off In Sunshine State

BOCA RATON, Fla. - In a matchup of Conference USA division leaders, the North Texas softball team will take on Florida Atlantic in a three-game series, beginning with a double-header at 3 and 5 p.m. CT Friday.
With a 6-3 mark in conference play, the Mean Green have a two-game advantage over UAB in the West Division and the Owls are perched atop the East Division at 7-2 in league play. North Texas is seeking their best 12-game start in C-USA action since 2014 (8-4).
North Texas is 16-14 all-time against Florida Atlantic and has taken two out of three in the last three series. UNT has a 9-4 mark against FAU since to 2012. Last season, then-freshman Lacy Gregory went 3-for-9 with four RBI and a home run over three games against the Owls.
Riding a four-game win streak, North Texas is coming off a 7-0 victory over Texas Southern Wednesday evening. Hope Trautwein struck out seven in four innings to pick up the win, and Maria Priest allowed just one hit over the final three innings to earn her second career save.
Over their last six contests, the Mean Green pitching staff is 5-1 with a 1.37 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 41 innings. Trautwein is 3-1 with a 0.88 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 24 innings in that span.
Freshman Maria Priest carried the UNT staff this past weekend, going 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA against the Lady Techsters and earning C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors. Priest struck out four in 13.2 innings and finished two of the three games.
The Owls' roster includes the C-USA leaders in runs (Emily Lochten, 30) and stolen bases (Madisyn Palmer, 30), but North Texas held the two to just two hits in 18 at-bats with one run and one stolen base in last year's series.
