DENTON — On what was the Mean Green soccer team's alumni reunion game, which hosted over 20 UNT soccer alums who combined had more than 50 conference championships between them, it was also an alumni game in the coaching boxes Sunday at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
North Texas and its head coach John Hedlund, a 1984 Midwestern State soccer alum, faced off against Pittsburgh and its first-year head coach Randy Waldrum, a two-time NCAA National Champion head coach at Notre Dame and a 1980 Midwestern State alum.
On Sunday, North Texas got the best of Pitt with a 4-1 win.
"A great effort by our women today, especially in the heat," Hedlund said. "It was great to see Randy on the sidelines today, two Midwestern State boys still living the dream.
He's been a great role model for me over the years and a true icon in our sport winning two NCAA National Championships at Notre Dame. No question in my mind once he gets his full blueprint on this Pittsburgh program they will definitely take-off and be a power in the ACC." Hedlund added.
Sunday's performance by North Texas (5-1-1) was a much different than Thursday at Weber State when it took the Mean Green 84 minutes to score and beat the Wildcats 1-0.
On Sunday versus Pittsburgh, it took only one minute and 49 seconds for the Mean Green to find the back of the net. But sophomore Elle Marie DeFrain's early goal was just the beginning.
UNT scored three goals in the first 23 minutes of Sunday's match and quickly put to rest any thought of a Pitt (3-2-1) comeback.
Trailing 2-0, the Panthers' Mikayla Schmidt scored to bring them within one, however, less than two minutes later, Mean Green senior Lauryn Bruffett scored on a header off of a throw-in from Brooke Lampe to push the lead back to two goals and stop any momentum swing Pitt was looking for.
UNT added a fourth goal one minute and 13 seconds into in the second-half. Freshman Olivia Klein who after Sunday's match has now scored three goals on the year on just seven shot attempts, scored off of an assist from Taylor Torres and give the Mean Green a decisive 4-1 lead.
Klein scored the game-winning goal on Thursday at Weber State.
With the goal on Sunday, Klein finds herself in a four-way tie for the team lead in goals with Torres, DeFrain and Aaliyah Nolan.
Torres scored the Mean Green's second goal on Sunday. She one-timed a perfect cross from Nolan to give UNT a 2-0 lead. Torres scored and had an assist on Sunday and now leads the team with 10 points. She led the team last season with 19 points.
After Klein gave the Mean Green a 4-1 lead, UNT was able to sit back a watch it's signature defense hold the Panthers to just one second-half shot attempt.
Sunday's match was North Texas' final home match until Sept. 30 against UT- San Antonio.
The Mean Green begin a five-match road trip this coming Friday at Houston Baptist.
UNT hosted HBU last year and won 5-0. Forward Berklee Peters recorded a hat-trick in that game.
