DENTON – After defeating TCU in a double-dual meet for the fourth year in a row to close 2018, the Mean Green swim and dive team returns to action with a dual-meet against conference foe Rice.
After spending part of the winter break training in Florida North Texas opens 2019 honoring its senior class. Diving events will begin at 3:30 in the Physical Education Building before swim events commence in the Pohl Rec Center shortly after 4 p.m. North Texas divers will compete alone, as Rice does not feature a diving team, scored by a guest judge.
"Rice is one of the top programs in the nation," head Coach Brittany Roth said. "The fact that they're in our conference makes this big time racing. Our girls need to be focused and we need to come out and give our best effort from start to finish. Rice is always prepared, fast and ready to race us and our girls have always risen to the challenge, so it should be a really great day of racing that we should get some solid results."
The Mean Green are riding high after defeating TCU in a double-dual meet in Fort Worth before the holidays. The Mean Green scored 149-142.50 against the Horned Frogs while defeating the Tigers of Ouachita Baptist 240-46.
North Texas placed first in both relays while sophomore Leigh Faires McGee walked away with two individual firsts in the 500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard freestyle. She was named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week Dec. 12.
Senior diver Averie Ruiz was recognized as the C-USA Diver of the Week for Dec. 12 after she finished second in 1-meter diving with a season-best 259.2 dive.
While Friday will be a big meet for the Mean Green, it will also be a time to celebrate the seven graduating seniors. Ruiz is the only diver while swimmers Emmabeth Jensen, Natalia Kwiatkoska, Kelsey Opiela, Kathleen Rousset, Meaghan Rousset and Brittany Thurstin will be recognized on the rec center pool deck during the second diving break for their four years at UNT.
The senior class will be honored with family alongside.
"This weekend is bittersweet," Roth said. "It's definitely a big celebration where we get to honor these girls who have given us their all for the last three or four years. I'm really excited to designate a meet where we honor them and appreciate everything they've done for us."
This is the first of two meets this month for North Texas. The Mean Green will compete in another double-dual meet against Incarnate Word and Old Dominion on Jan. 26.
