DENTON – After defeating Rice for the first time in six years, North Texas swim and dive looks to carry its momentum into a double-dual meet with TCU and Incarnate Word at 11 a.m.
The Mean Green travel to San Antonio on Saturday to begin the homestretch of the season. It has been a strong 2019 for head coach Brittany Roth and squad. With back-to-back wins over TCU and Rice most recently, the 2018-19 season has been a year of constant growth.
With the pre-conference time trial on the horizon for February 9, the team will look to continue the trend.
"Momentum just helps build confidence," Roth said. "This is a really awesome group. The way they competed against an in-state, in-confernce rival [Rice] that's very exciting. The girls have a push going into these last few meets of the season."
The Mean Green most recently faced the Cardinals last season in a head-to-head meet in Denton. The Cardinals fell 126-81. North Texas improved to 7-0 all-time against Incarnate Word in head-to-head meets. Then freshman Leigh Faires McGee accounted for two of the six victories in individual events against the Cardinals in 2018. She posted the top times in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.84) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:23.72). Then sophomore Jowita Sienczyk edged out UIW's Mariana Alves Olguin by two-hundreths of a second to claim first in the 50-yard freestyle in 2018. Saturday is a chance for Roth to lock-down her top line-up.
"This is a really good team from top to bottom," Roth said. "We're trying to make decisions on relays and what is going to be the strongest order. We want to make sure we're giving everybody a fair look so we can have our best when it comes to conference."
