COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The North Texas tennis team wrapped up the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Texas Regionals with another strong showing.
A tournament the Mean Green have progressively become more and more of a dominate fixture in, once again made their presence felt this year with one of the youngest teams in the tournament and every single woman that played won a match.
"Overall a great experience for our team to play the best players in one of the toughest regions in the country," said head coach Sujay Lama. "We grew as a team with each match and know the areas we need to work on the rest of the fall season."
North Texas finished the tournament with 10 singles wins and Nidhi Surapaneni and freshman Kexuan Zhou each reached the quarterfinals of the singles consolation bracket. After losing in the first round of the singles draw, Surapaneni and Zhou bounced back to win three straight matches each in the consolation bracket and reach the quarterfinal round. The resilience they showed to lead a youthful team excites the coaches for the future of this year.
Throughout the three-day tournament for the Mean Green, UNT coaches saw the young team grow and find ways to compete against some of the region's toughest competition.
Some of the team's notable wins during the tournament include freshman Sophia Hummel defeating Texas' Gabby Cusano. Sophomore Maria Ponomareva defeating Conference USA foe Kylee Kato from UTSA in straight sets. In doubles, Surapaneni and Ponomareva beat a Houston doubles team, 8-2, in the first round of the doubles draw.
The ITA Texas Regional is the biggest tournament of the fall season and gives the Mean Green coaches a great window into the team they will have during the spring season. With every woman on the team picking up wins in the Texas Regional, the North Texas coaches feel very positive about the upcoming season and yet see so much more room for potential growth. Typically every Mean Green player that played well in the Texas Regional in the past has always gone on to see success in the spring.
There are just two more fall tournaments left for the Mean Green before the spring season begins.
UNT will be back in action in two and a half weeks for the Cal State Northridge Invite and then in January will play in the SMU Invite, which is right on the heels of its first spring match versus Stephen F. Austin.
