Rolling Into San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO — The North Texas soccer team, which is the only 3-0-0 team in Conference USA and has yet to give up a goal in league play, is headed down the I-35 to face the UT San Antonio Roadrunners for a Sunday afternoon match.
Led by their defense, the reigning C-USA champion Mean Green (8-3-0, 3-0-0) have opened conference play with three consecutive shutouts and are coming off a dominating 3-0 victory over Middle Tennessee last week.
Sunday's match, which will be streamed live on CUSA.tv at 1 p.m., is UNT's first conference road match of the season. North Texas has outscored the Roadrunners (4-4-1, 0-2-0) by a combined score of 8-0 over the last two seasons. However, both of those matches were played in Denton.
"(Last week) was a great week for the team," said senior Dominique James. "We were able to get two wins against a couple of strong teams and pulled out two more shutouts. I'm proud of what we were able to accomplish (last week) and hope to continue our success next weekend against UTSA."
Offensively, this season's team has been tasked with replacing multiple key weapons who graduated after last year. Last Sunday versus Middle Tennessee the Mean Green appeared to finally get things totally rolling on the offensive end by controlling possession and finishing more scoring opportunities.
Junior Berklee Peters has been the catalyst up front all season long for UNT. Her nine goals this season are the second-most in C-USA. Peters, who was third team all-conference last season when she scored just six goals, netted two of the Mean Green's three goals against Middle Tennessee. Both of the goals were highlight reel material.
Along with winning the C-USA Tournament title a season ago, North Texas won the 2018 regular season crown too. They started conference play 4-0 last season and beat UTSA 4-0 during that portion of the schedule.
Peters scored two goals in last year's match against the Roadrunners. In two career matches against UTSA, the three-year starter has recorded five points against them.
Peters tends to score in bunches. Six of her nine goals have come in three matches. The Keller native has seven career multi-goal performances on her resume.
Defense has been the Mean Green's calling card since the program's birth in 1995 and nothing has changed 25 years later.
Dominique James has been named the league's defensive player of the week two weeks in a row and goal keeper Kelsey Brann was the keeper of the week last week too. North Texas' backline, which is the most veteran group in all of the league has the team trending in the right direction.
