Mean Green Release 2020 Softball Schedule

DENTON – Coming off a program-record 35 wins in 2019, the defending Conference USA Champion North Texas softball team officially released their 2020 schedule Thursday.

The 51-game slate features 23 matchups in the confines of Lovelace Stadium, four tournaments and 21 Conference USA matchups. North Texas will face off against four opponents who ended the 2019 regular season in the Top-20 of the USA Today softball poll, including at least two match-ups with national runner-up Oklahoma.

"I'm really excited about the challenge that our schedule brings," head coach Rodney DeLong said, DeLong is entering his second year at the head of the North Texas softball program. "We want to be an elite program and so we have to play elite teams. This schedule will not only prepare us for Conference USA games but we have a great slate of home games that our fans can enjoy."

The upcoming season also brings forth a new Conference play design. In year's past teams have played the three-game series' with a doubleheader on Saturday before the series finale on Sunday. This season, teams will play a traditional three-game series, with all three games being on a different day (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). The 2020 Conference USA Tournament will be May 6-9 in Bowling Green, Kentucky hosted by Western Kentucky University.

The season kicks off on February 7 when pitching coach Jamie Allred returns to her alma mater as the Mean Green travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana to participate in the McNeese State Tournament. The tournament will feature a matchup with Prairie View A&M, two matchups with McNeese State, and a single game with both Arkansas Pine Bluff and Louisiana.

North Texas will then return home to host a tournament on Valentine's weekend, playing home contests against Creighton, Abilene Christian, Missouri State and Tennessee Martin.

A road trip for a midweek game against Texas on February 19 will proceed the Mean Green participating in a tournament hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The tournament will feature two matchups with both Texas Southern and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

The Mean Green will play a midweek tilt with UT-Arlington on February 25 at home before traveling to Norman, Oklahoma to participate in a tournament hosted by the national runner-up Oklahoma Sooners. Matchups with Northwestern, Abilene Christian and Oklahoma await the Mean Green up I-35.

Conference USA play will open up on the road as the Mean Green head to San Antonio to take on the Roadrunners of UTSA March 6-8, North Texas swept UTSA at home in 2019. The Mean Green will stay down in San Antonio following the series for a midweek matchup with Incarnate Word on March 9.

The first home conference series will be March 13-15 when the Mean Green play host to Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers were the only Conference USA opponent to win a three-game series over North Texas in 2019. The Mean Green will then play a midweek tilt with the Oklahoma Sooners on March 18. The Sooners, who finished the 2019 regular seasons as the no. 1 team in the nation won the Big 12 Regular season and Tournament and made it all the way to the Women's College World Series Finals where they fell to UCLA two games to none.

The Mean Green will then hit the road for a conference series with Southern Miss from March 20-22 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. North Texas took two of three from the Golden Eagles in Denton in 2019 to open their conference slate. North Texas will be on the road the following weekend when they head to Fayetteville, Arkansas for a non-conference series with Arkansas. The Razorbacks, who finished 2019 ranked No.20 will host the Mean Green for a single game on March 27 before a doubleheader on March 28.

The month of April will open with seven home games in seven days starting with a doubleheader against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on April 1 before the Mean Green host the 2019 Conference USA Tournament Champions Louisiana Tech April 3-5. The Mean Green took two of three from the Lady Techsters in Ruston in 2019, which ultimately helped the Mean Green to their first regular season Conference title in program history.

North Texas will hit the road April 9-11 for matchups with Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, the Mean Green took two of three from the Blue Raiders in 2019 to close out the regular season. A midweek home game with Sam Houston State will follow the road trip on April 15 before FIU comes to Denton April 17-19, the Mean Green swept the Golden Panthers in 2019 in Miami.Â

The Mean Green will then head to El Paso for three games with the UTEP Miners April 24-26 before returning home May 1-3 to close out the regular season against the UAB Blazers. North Texas swept both the Miners and Blazers in 2019.
