ARLINGTON — The North Texas men's basketball team rolled to a nearly wire-to-wire road win on Monday as they beat UT Arlington 77-66.
Five Mean Green players scored in double figures with Javion Hamlet and Umoja Gibson leading the way with 18 points each. Hamlet also added seven assists to go along with his career-high performance.
The road win ends a three-game losing streak at UTA for UNT and is its first win in Arlington since 2009. The Mean Green beat the Mavericks 63-61 in Denton last season.
"It's great to see our guys put everything together into the game," said head coach Grant McCasland. "Definitely our most complete game of the season so far."
The win ends a two-game skid for UNT who has faced one of the toughest schedules in the nation early on. UNT's first seven opponents had a combined .744 winning percentage, which was the 12th highest opponent winning percentage in the nation. Similar to their previous game versus No. 15 Utah State, the Mean Green came out firing on the defensive end in the first half on Monday. UNT kept UTA's shooting percentage low and drew four charges in the first stanza as the defensive effort led to offense.
Redshirt senior DJ Draper nailed his first three 3-point attempts and Hamlet attacked the paint, finding open shooters and drawing fouls.
The aggressive effort gave North Texas (3-5) a comfortable 35-23 first half lead. That lead grew to 20 points early in the second-half as the Mean Green made 10 of their first 12 second half shots.
However, the veteran Mavericks (4-5) made their run.
"Give UTA credit," McCasland said. "They attacked and forced us to take bad shots."
UTA cut the deficit down to just six points with five minutes remaining. But there to put an end to the run was Hamlet and Draper.
Immediately after forcing a UTA turnover, Hamlet drove into the paint and kicked it out to Draper in the corner who sank his fourth 3-pointer of the game and the 99th of his career, The 3-pointer seemed to take the wind out of the Mavericks' comeback attempt.
Down the stretch, Gibson and Hamlet were clutch at the free throw line as they closed out the Mean Green's first road victory of the year.
Over UNT's last four games, Gibson is now averaging 19.25 points per game.
"DJ's three was clutch," Hamlet said. "We stayed together and played a confident game"
The Mean Green return home on Thursday as they host Oklahoma at 7:05 at the Super Pit.
