Black Defeats Green In Intrasquad Scrimmage

DENTON – Despite a very light, but steady rain for a majority of Friday, the Mean Green softball team participated in an intra-squad Black versus Green scrimmage at Lovelace Stadium.
Black came out on top 9-5 after late runs, but the day was more about the time on the field rather than the result. Sophomore Hope Trautwein went the distance in the circle for the Black team, while junior Jenna Goodrich, and freshmen Ally Lindsey and Baily Tindell split the work across seven innings for the Green side.
For head coach Rodney DeLong, he was happy with what he saw on Friday.
"Our bats got better as the day went on," DeLong said. "It was good for the offense. Our two starting pitchers [Goodrich and Trautwein] threw really well. I was very happy with that."
Goodrich's off-speed stuff was working as she struck out five through three innings of work to start the game. The Black team scored the opening run of the game however when senior Sally Gastelo allowed a Goodrich pitch to get past her. Sophomore Katie Clark scampered home from third to open the scoring 1-0 in the home half of the third inning.
Freshman Ally Lindsey took over for Goodrich for the Green team and allowed a couple runs in her first frame of work. A one-out triple to left from sophomore Kourtney Williams drove home senior Harley Perella to put Black up 2-0. Williams scored on a sac-fly to make it 3-0. The Black lead would stretch to 5-0 before Green came roaring back.
With bases loaded in the fifth, senior Hannah Gerecke blasted a double to left-center, clearing the bases and opening the scoring for the Green team. Freshman Jordan Strange followed up with a clutch two-run double to tie things at five.
"There's a lot of kids who have potential to be good on our team," DeLong said. "A lot of hard nose kids. More than anything I like the fight. It goes back to what we want. It was great effort. I was proud of that."
Black re-took the lead as junior Lacy Gregory scored on an error before senior Rhylie Makawe score on an inside the park home run to push the lead to 7-5. The Black team got on the freshmen pitchers for two more runs through Gregory when she lifted a one out two-run homer to left to finish out the ballgame in the bottom of the 7th.
"We know who we are," Gregory said. "We're confident in who we are becoming and ready to get started."
The Mean Green get started a week from Friday, on February 8 against the University of Northern Colorado as a part of a weekend tournament hosted by Texas A&M.
