RUSTON, La. – North Texas softball defeated Louisiana Tech 5-2 on Sunday to take home the first road series win over the Lady Techsters (22-9, 4-2) in program history.
Freshman Bailey Tindell got the start, and picked up her first collegiate win. The Salado-native went four innings allowing just one run on five hits, striking out one. She forced a key double play as she left the ballgame with her team leading 3-1.
"Bailey has been throwing really well," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "Glad to see her finally get a win, she's deserved two or three other ones. We played a solid defensive game behind her. She pitched well yesterday. We thought she'd be the one to go with. I'm proud of her."
Hope Trautwein got her third save of the season, finishing the final three innings allowing a run on two hits. She allowed a solo home run on the first batter she faced before settling in and striking out one.
"Your number one pitcher has to be able to do that," DeLong said. "She did a good job."
The Mean Green (18-11, 7-2) brought the energy in the rubber match. North Texas scored a run in each the first and second innings. Rhylie Makawe bloop singled to right field scoring Harley Perella in the first. Perella then doubled to right scoring Kenzie Young in the second opening a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth North Texas extended the lead to 3-0 when Lacy Gregory scored Young with a sac-fly to center. The Lady Techsters came back with a run in the fourth when Bayli Simon singled up the middle scoring one to make it 3-1. Tindell escaped limiting the damage.
"I think we all had it in us," Tindell said. "We came together as a team and a family. The energy was so important. We just overpowered them and came loud and proud."
In the fifth a solo homer cut the score to 3-2 before Tayla Evans came through with an important double in the sixth, scoring two runs to put the Mean Green up 5-2.
North Texas now prepares for a Tuesday match-up with Abilene Christian on the road.
"We grew up a lot from Wednesday night to today," DeLong said. "That was a huge team win. We really grew this week and I think the mentality of the team will take us a long way. It's nice, it's good but it's over. We've got several tough games coming up and we've got to go to work."
