DENTON – Despite having game time moved up nearly 24 hours, Mean Green softball run-ruled Saint Mary's College 8-0 Friday night at Lovelace Stadium to open up a three-game series. Friday night marked the end of a 19-day road trip away from home.
"It feels great to be home," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We like playing at home, it's a great atmosphere so it was definitely great to be back."
Due to forecasted severe weather, North Texas (23-12, 10-2 C-USA) and Saint Mary's College (7-24, 0-0 WCC) mutually agreed to move the first of a three game series to Friday night, with a double header set for Sunday. North Texas has now won five straight games.
"We were energetic, we didn't play great softball but we played good enough," DeLong said. "11 hits is good, we could've been a little better mentally at the plate, but we played good defense and didn't make any errors."
The Mean Green struck first with three singles in the first frame, the third by junior Hanna Rebar plated senior Harley Perella to get the scoring started. Sophomore Hope Trautwein got the start for the Mean Green, going the distance in the shortened game and recording her 15th win of the season.
With tonight's win, Trautwein matched her win total from all of 2018.
"Hope is still kind of finding her best stuff," DeLong said. "She had great stuff in her last outing, and good stuff tonight, but she's still giving us a great chance to win."
North Texas would add three runs to their lead in the second, the first two coming off the bat of senior Rhylie Makawe. Makawe would blast a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for two RBIs and her fifth home run of the season. Freshman Tayla Evans popped out in foul territory down the left field line, plating Perella who would tag and score from third to make the score 4-0.
The two teams would trade scoreless chances in the third and fourth innings, but the Mean Green would end it in walk off fashion in the fifth.
After a leadoff walk to senior Hannah Gerecke followed by a one-out walk to junior Kenzie Young, Makawe would blast her second home run of the game over the left field wall. This one a three-run shot to put the Mean Green up 7-0.
Makawe's two home runs would be good enough for her second multi-home run game of the season. She homered twice at UT Arlington back on February 27.
"I just felt more relaxed today," Makawe said. "We had a good vibe going before the game."
Perella would then single for her third hit of the day, moving all the way to third on back-to-back two-out walks to junior Lacy Gregory and Evans. Bringing junior Camille Grahmann to the plate as a pinch hitter with the winning run at third.
Grahmann would place the 2-2 pitch down the third base line, plating Perella and ending the ballgame with an 8-0 win.
"We have a good outfield with a lot of kids who can play," DeLong said. "Camille is a talented kid, and for her to come off the bench with some opportunities to be successful is good to see."
Sofia Earle took the loss for Saint Mary's College, surrendering three runs on five hits in an inning and a third in the circle. North Texas and Saint Mary's College will play games two and three of the series in a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 10 a.m. streaming on CUSA.tv.
