BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Top-seeded North Texas fell in its quarterfinal matchup against No. 4 Marshall 1-0 Thursday morning in the Air Force Reserve Conference USA Softball Championship.
Marshall (38-18) scored the lone run of the game on a bloop double to right field in the third inning. North Texas pitcher Hope Trautwein allowed just the one run on four hits with four strike outs and no walks in a complete-game performance.
The Mean Green (34-18) stranded 12 runners on base in a game originally scheduled for 2 p.m. but moved up to 9:30 a.m. due to weather.
"We were not good with runners in scoring position," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "That was the biggest difference in the game. Have to be better there. It's something we've struggled with as of late but we keep giving ourselves a chance. We were one or two hits away from winning that game really."
Catcher Nicole Ochotnicki went 2 for 3 and Katie Clark, Harley Perella and Lacy Gregory provided a hit each for North Texas.
North Texas drops into the loser's bracket in the double-elimination format. The Mean Green will play Friday at 2:30 against the loser of Thursday's game between Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee.
The Mean Green must win two straight to reach the final.
"There's no doubt we can make a run," DeLong said. "I believe in them. I believe we'll come ready to play hard tomorrow. We will see what happens."
