Mean Green Start 2020-21 Season

DENTON — The defending 2020 Conference USA champions, North Texas men's basketball team, begins the 2020-21 season on Thursday with a home game against Mississippi Valley State at 7 p.m.
Thursday's game will be streamed on YouTube Live and the Mean Green Sports Network (KNTU 88.1 FM, KHYI 95.3 FM, TuneIN app). Dave Barnett and Hank Dickenson will have the call.
The Mean Green, who posted their third straight 20-win season last year (20-11) and set the program record for conference wins (14-4), have not lost a season-opener since the start of the 2012-13 season.
They return three starters from last season's championship squad including 2020 C-USA Player of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year Javion Hamlet.
Thursday will be the Mean Green and Delta Devils third all-time meeting. UNT enters Thursday's game 2-0 versus MVSU.

Javion Is Back
Thursday will be North Texas' Javion Hamlet's first game back at the Super Pit since he scored 25 points against Western Kentucky on March 1 and led UNT to the regular season league championship. In 16 home games last year, Hamlet averaged a team-high 15.7 points per game. The point guard's assist / turnover ratio at home last year was 2.1 (79/37). He was a 48 percent 3-point shooter (15-31) at home and shot 57 percent overall from the field at home (85-149).
New Starting 5
UNT was one of just two teams last year to have the same starting lineup in every game. UNC Asheville was the other. UNT returns three starters from last season's squad.
Home Court Cooking
North Texas has won nine of its last 10 at home and the one loss, which came on Feb. 22, was by just two points. UNT hasn't lost a home game by more than five points since the 2018-19 season.
Closing Teams Out
In North Texas' 14 conference wins last year, the Mean Green held its opponents to 27 percent shooting after the final media timeout of regulation. On March 1, UNT trailed WKU by five at the last media timeout and then held WKU to 0-4 shooting following the last media timeout and made the comeback to send it to overtime where they'd go on to win 78-72.
Player of the Year
North Texas' Javion Hamlet was voted 2020 C-USA Player of the Year. He became the first UNT men's basketball player to earn a conference player of the year honor since Deon Hunter in 1989 (Southland). The last C-USA men's basketball player to win back-to-back player of the year honors was Cincinnati's point guard Steve Logan in 2002.
Male Athlete of the Year
North Texas' Javion Hamlet was named the 2020 C-USA Male Athlete of the Year. He is the first UNT student-athlete (male or female) to win the award. He was the first C-USA men's basketball student-athlete to win Male Athlete of the Year since Memphis' Chris Douglas-Roberts in 2008.
