Mean Green fall to Rice

DENTON – An inefficient second half doomed the North Texas women's basketball team in a 67-52 loss to Rice on Saturday at The Super Pit.
The Mean Green shot 48% from the field in the first half, which kept them within striking distance of the Owls heading into halftime. However, Rice (14-6, 9-0 in C-USA) began the third period on an 8-0 run before going on to outscore UNT 22-6 in the third quarter.
North Texas (9-12, 3-6 in C-USA) only made 3 of 14 shots in the third period.
"The third quarter was not good for us offensively," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "I don't necessarily think we took a lot of bad shots, but I do think we settled for some. And then our good shots didn't fall, so that was a rough quarter."
An impressive performance from Rice's Nancy Mulkey and a struggle to find the bottom of the net destroyed any chance of a Mean Green comeback in the second half. Mulkey – a 6-foot-9-inch All-Conference selection last season – scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and collected two blocks.
Rice also shot an effective 58.5% from the field, which happened to be its second-best shooting performance of the season.
"They're unlike anybody else in the conference from a matchup standpoint," head coach Jalie Mitchell said of Rice. "Defensively, I would've liked to be better. There was one very important part of the game plan that we didn't execute very well, and I think that caused them to get some easy looks at the basket."
While the Mean Green (9-12, 3-6 in C-USA) struggled to shoot the ball as a team, freshman N'Yah Boyd caught fire from the field. Boyd finished with 20 points on 9 of 13 shooting and played an instrumental part in keeping the Mean Green within striking distance heading into the break.
Rice outrebounded North Texas 38-20, the most that North Texas has been outrebounded by in a single game this season. The Owls, who are the reigning Conference USA champions, also took advantage at free throw line, making 17 of 24 shots while UNT only attempted 10 shots from the charity stripe.
North Texas will return to action next Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Middle Tennessee at The Super Pit.
