Celebrating A Hero
5/10/2020 9:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
DENTON — North Texas men's basketball forward Zachary Simmons' mom, Kathy, is a dedicated hero and Mean Green fan.
Along with being at every home game at the UNT Super Pit, Kathy, a Cedar Hill resident, has made trips to watch her son and team play from San Francisco all the way to Washington D.C. and everything in between.
Her commitment is seen in her career and community as well.
A nurse practitioner, Kathy is working on the front lines during the coronavirus pandemic.

As a nurse practitioner, she is a licensed medical professional responsible for general patient care. Her duties are similar to that of registered nurses and family doctors. She can diagnose, prescribe medication, and take charge of their patients' care. Much like family doctors, Kathy works with patients of all ages throughout their lives. She has worked the last 10-plus years at the Abilene Regional Medical Center in the emergency room. In addition she oversees other nurse practitioners covering multiple states across the United States. Since the Mean Green's season came to an abrupt end due to the outbreak in early March, Kathy has also made sure to keep her team informed on precautions.
With Sunday being Mother's Day Zachary and the team wished to highlight Kathy on her bravery and dedication.
UNT: How proud of your mom are you?
ZS: It's hard to even put it into words. She's done a lot for my sister and I to be in the positions we are today and i'm eternally grateful for tat. She's a role model for me. Seeing how she's willing to risk her health to help others which takes immense sacrifice.
UNT: What's it like having a mom who is on the front lines?
ZS: It's a little troublesome worrying about her health but they take good precautions. She lets me know how things are looking through all this going on.
UNT: What's something you'd like to let the world know about your mom?
ZS: How dedicated she is to what she does and how she perseveres through tough times
