1/20/2021 9:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
DENTON – North Texas women's basketball hosts Old Dominion Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. inside The Super Pit.
About the Mean Green
North Texas dropped their first Conference USA game Jan. 16 at UTEP to move to 5-1 in league play. Redshirt sophomore Quincy Noble leads the team in scoring at 18.4 points per game. Sophomore N'Yah Boyd averages 13.8 and dishes out team-best 4.1 assists. Redshirt senior Madison Townley posts 9.2 points along with a team-high 8.0 rebounds.
About the Monarchs
ODU sits at 2-4 in the C-USA standings with a pair of losses to both FIU and Rice along with two wins against Florida Atlantic. Three Monarchs average double-digit scoring in Victoria Morris (15.8 ppg), Amari Young (15.1) and reigning C-USA Player of the Week Ajah Wayne (14.0). Young and Wayne each pull down a team-high 9.3 rebounds.
History between UNT and ODU
Old Dominion holds an 8-4 advantage over the Mean Green dating to the 2013-14 season. North Texas began the series with a win before the Monarchs tallied five straight victories during 2014-15 and 2015-16. The teams split in 2016-17, UNT took both meetings in 2017-18, and ODU grabbed the victory in each of the past two seasons.
Last meeting
NORFOLK, Va. (Feb. 15, 2020) – A 25-point third quarter and a career-high 19 points from freshman Jazion Jackson were not enough to overcome a 71-66 loss to Old Dominion Saturday evening at Chartway Arena.
Jackson's efficient offensive performance resulted in 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Senior Anisha George, who fouled out with over a minute left in the game, finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. George was one point short of her seventh double-double this season.
Undefeated No More
The 62-52 loss at UTEP Jan. 16 put an end to five straight Mean Green victories to open conference play, the best start in program history. Only two Conference USA teams hold an unblemished record in the league standings in Rice (6-0) and Charlotte (4-0). Middle Tennessee joins North Texas at 5-1. That puts the Mean Green in good company as MTSU and Rice were picked 1-2 in the preseason poll and Charlotte came in fourth.
Efficient Freshman
Tommisha Lampkin has been a steady contender in the rotation for the Mean Green. In just over 10 minutes per game, the freshman forward averages 5.0 points on nearly 55-percent shooting and 4.2 rebounds. Using the average per 40 minutes method, Lampkin is second in both scoring at 19.1 points per game and rebounding with 16.0.
Townley Pulling 'Em Down
If there is a rebound to be grabbed, Madison Townley is your best bet. The redshirt senior recorded a career-high 21 boards in the win at UAB Jan. 1 for the fourth-highest total in program history and the top performance in Conference USA this year. Townley ranks eighth in C-USA with her 8.0 per contest and is third in offensive rebounds at 3.8.
Starting Numbers for Lee
Since moving into the starting lineup, Rochelle Lee's statistics have much increased. In the past six contests, the redshirt junior forward is averaging 5.8 points and 4.2 rebounds, compared to 1.0 and 0.3, respectively, before being in the first five. In the victory at UAB Jan.2, Lee scored a career-high 14 points, and in the win over UTSA Jan. 9 she collected a career-high 11 rebounds.
A Noble Start
Quincy Noble's double-digit scoring streak was halted in the loss at UTEP Jan. 16. Before that, she had scored in double figures in every contest she had played at North Texas with a career-high 30 points coming at Louisiana Dec. 4. The redshirt sophomore guard recorded a game-high 26 points Jan. 8 against UTSA and knocked down six 3-pointers, the fourth-highest single game performance from beyond the arc in program history. Noble's 18.4 points per game ranks fourth in Conference USA. She is first in 3-point percentage (43.8) and second in 3-pointers made per game (3.18), which is the 11th-best mark in the nation.
Deep Improvement
The Mean Green struggled from the 3-point line last season by connecting on just 27.8 percent of their attempts, ranking them 300 of the 348 teams in NCAA Division I. So far in 2020-21, the team is hitting at a 36.9-percent clip to sit 33rd in the nation and second in Conference USA.
Free Throws Woes
The Mean Green have had trouble at the line, ranking ninth in Conference USA at 63.6 percent. However, three main contributors from last year have made marked improvements since 2019-20. N'Yah Boyd went from 57-percent last season to a much improved 74-percent. Madison Townley went from 51 to 59-percent, and Jazion Jackson has gone up nine percentage points.
Start of C-USA play
With the win at UAB Jan. 1, North Texas has earned victories in the past three Conference USA openers. Under head coach Jalie Mitchell, UNT is 4-2 all-time when beginning league play.
The Mean Green compiled a 3-0 Conference USA start for the first time in program history in 2018-19 and increased it to 5-0 with the wins over UTSA and one at UTEP.
Non-con results
UNT finished non-conference play at 3-2 in 2020. Dating to the 2015-16 season, the beginning of head coach Jalie Mitchell's tenure, the Mean Green are 32-21 in games occurring before the start of C-USA competition. The team posted a mark of 6-7 in pre-conference play last season.

Last Mean Green Outing
EL PASO (Jan. 16, 2021) – A sluggish start for North Texas women's basketball resulted in a 62-52 loss at UTEP Saturday inside the Don Haskins Center to conclude the Mean Green's five-game win streak that led to best league start in program history.
