TCU Defeats Mean Green, 4-2

FORT WORTH — The North Texas tennis lost 4-2 Wednesday afternoon at TCU.
The Mean Green (0-2) jumped out to an early lead over the Horned Frogs (3-0) by winning the doubles point but couldn't quite get it done in singles as TCU grabbed the four clinching points.
"I was happy with how the team competed at a high-level," said junior Maria Ponomareva. "Everyone fought hard and did their best. With the work we put in every day I'm sure that we will keep improving on our results."
UNT won the doubles point behind a clinching victory at the top of its doubles lineup. Senior Nidhi Surapaneni and junior Lucie Devier battled for a 7-5 win to put the Mean Green up 1-0 to start the match.
After TCU tied the match early in singles with a victory at No. 3, the Mean Green retook the lead when Ponomareva captured a straight set singles victory at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-2. Ponomareva and her doubles partner Kexuan Zhou also had a quick doubles victory at the No. 2 position, 6-4. The doubles victory put Surapaneni and Devier in the position to clinch the doubles point.
"Everyone did a great job in doubles and brought a lot of energy," Ponomareva said. "In singles I started my game from the first point and didn't lose any opportunities to finish games. I was very concentrated and didn't want to give my opponent a single point."

UNT hosts Sam Houston State on Sunday at noon for its home opener.
