SAN ANTONIO — The North Texas women's soccer team beat Incarnate Word Friday afternoon 1-0 in its lone exhibition match of the year.
Friday was the first time the Mean Green had played against an opponent since Nov. 15, 2019 in the NCAA Tournament — 437 days ago.
The six-time reigning Conference USA champions got the match-winning goal from senior Berklee Peters in the 2nd minute off an assist from freshman Madi Starrett.
On Tuesday Peters was named C-USA Preseason All-Conference and is the program's career active leader in goals scored with 25. She had 14 last season en route to a postseason all-conference honor.
UNT went 15-6-1 last season and 7-2-1 in league play. They hosted the league tournament and had one of the greatest performances in C-USA Tournament history as they claimed the title and earned their seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Peters' goal on Friday was her lone shot on the night. Sophomore midfielder Michelle Gonzalez put two shots on target, which led the team. Junior forward Olivia Klein had two shots with one on goal.
Newcomers Connor Barker and Taylor Tufts also attempted a shot on goal.
Last season's C-USA Goalkeeper of the Year Kelsey Brann made three saves in the shutout win over the Cardinals.
UNT plays its season opener on Feb. 7 at SMU at 1 p.m. Its home opener is Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. versus Midwestern State. The Mean Green will also welcome Oklahoma (March 4), No. 12 Oklahoma State (March 14) and Texas Tech (March 28) to Denton this coming season.
