DENTON, Texas – The North Texas Mean Green women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season with a 76-62, victory over Texas Woman's University on Thursday night.
It was the four-headed monster of Aly Gamez, Jazion Jackson, Tommisha Lampkin, and Quincy Noble that was too much to handle for TWU. Gamez, Jackson, Lampkin, and Noble all reached double figures, respectively. Dallas native, Jackson led the way for the green and white posting 16 points, five boards, four dimes, and one steal.
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter raining in three-pointers, as they shot 66.7% on six attempts. The Mean Green quickly bounced back with its best quarter of the night. North Texas made seven-of-nine from the field, and they were perfect from deep going three-for-three. The Mean Green took all the momentum into the locker room with a 10-point advantage.
In the third quarter, TWU showed fight, but it wasn't enough to pull the inner city upset. North Texas regrouped and took it to the Pioneers winning the fourth quarter, 23-11. In the final quarter of the game, the Mean Green women shot 58.8% from the floor which proved to be enough to lift them over the Pioneers. There was no scare as Head Coach Jalie Mitchell's squad secured the win.
North Texas won in every major statistical category and some by a comfortable margin. All in all, the exhibition proved to be a good warm-up for both ball clubs. The Mean Green will turn its attention to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma for the regular season opener. The game is slated for 5:30 p.m. (CT) on Nov. 9 at the Super Pit.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MITCHELL
"We made some adjustments when they came out hot. We did a much better job with our on-ball defense and our close outs to cut the early deficit. Our second and fourth quarter defense looked like they were the best by the numbers. But the thing is, we must get to a point where we are playing like that for the full 40 minutes. I was encouraged by how our new players competed tonight and the different look they give our team."
