DENTON – North Texas softball and head coach Rodney DeLong officially announced their 2021 season schedule on Monday. The schedule announcement comes after a ten-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the remainder of the 2020 season last March.
Â
Five is a magic number when it comes to the Mean Green's 2021 slate. North Texas will play in five tournaments at the beginning of the season, five Conference USA series, five games against top-10 teams and five games against first-time opponents . The five conference series will be against the fellow West Division opponents due to the pandemic and will be played in four-game formats.
Â
"We always want to play a competitive schedule that can prepare us for winning a championship," DeLong said. "I'm excited to see how this group takes on the challenges that our schedule presents."
Â
Within the first month of the season, the Mean Green will play three matchups against Top-10 teams with none of the matchups being at home. The Mean Green will open the season on the road in Hammond, Louisiana for the 2021 Lion Classic at Southeastern Louisiana February 13-14. North Texas will face three opponents for the first time in program history, Southern Illinois – Edwardsville, Southeastern Louisiana and South Dakota.
Â
After the opening tournament the Mean Green will face their first major challenge of 2021, as they travel to Austin to take on No. 6 Texas on February 17. After the meeting with the Longhorns on the road, the Mean Green will face off with them along with Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Lamar, No. 10 Oklahoma State and Kansas at the Inaugural Tracy Beard College Classic in Frisco from February 19-21.
Â
North Texas will play their first game at Lovelace Stadium on February 23 when they host Abilene Christian before hosting the North Texas Invitational February 26-28, there they will take on Incarnate Word, Tarleton State and Stephen F. Austin. The Mean Green will then continue their tournament schedule and begin an 11-game road trip with the Boerner Invitational at UT Arlington March 4-7. In Arlington, North Texas will take on the host Mavericks along with Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Iowa State, Missouri State and Wichita State.
Â
The Mean Green will then continue their road trip with a visit to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on the No. 10 ranked Cowgirls for the second time in the season. North Texas will then continue on to Wichita, Kansas where they will take on Wichita State, Missouri State and Omaha in the Shocker Softball Tournament at Wichita State.
Â
Two midweek games will sandwich spring break as the Mean Green will host UT Arlington on March 16 before hitting the road again to take on Abilene Christian in Abilene on March 30. Conference USA play will open at home with UAB paying a visit April 2-3, then the Mean Green will travel to Pine Bluff, Arkansas to take on the Arkansas – Pine Bluff Golden Lions April 9-10. North Texas will then take on UT Arlington in Arlington on April 13 before traveling to El Paso to take on UTEP April 16-18.
Â
A trip to Stephenville on April 21 to take on Tarleton State will be the Mean Green's final road non-conference game before hosting Southern Miss April 24-25. North Texas will then conclude its non-conference matchup when they host the No. 2/4 Oklahoma Sooners on April 28. The regular season home slate will conclude April 30-May 2 when they host the UTSA Roadrunners, their lone conference opponent from the 2020 season.
