DENTON – Jazion Jackson knocked down a pair of free throws with less than a second remaining to will North Texas women's basketball to a 52-51 win over Marshall Friday inside The Super Pit and set a program-best for Conference USA victories.
The ninth C-USA win for the Mean Green (12-4, 9-2 C-USA) surpasses the previous high of eight, set during the 2016-17 season during head coach Jalie Mitchell's second season. The Mean Green have three C-USA games remaining.
Quincy Noble collected the first double-double of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rochelle Lee shared team-high scoring honors with Noble, and Jackson added 11. Madison Townley pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, and N'Yah Boyd collected a career-high five steals.
"We had some big opportunities, some big and-ones, some big rebounds," Mitchell said. "I love the fact that we converted at the free throw line."
With the Mean Green clinging to a 48-46 lead with just over three minutes to play, Townley took a charge against Marshall (6-9, 5-8 C-USA) that resulted in a Tommisha Lampkin bucket on the other end and a 50-46 edge with 2:51 remaining. Each team lost a pair of possessions on turnovers before the Thundering Herd sank a 3-pointer following a timeout.
Marshall found an opening in the paint for a layup to take a 51-50 lead with 18 seconds on the clock, and North Texas called for a timeout. A shot from the top of the key by Boyd was off the mark, but Jackson squeezed in for the offensive board and was fouled on the putback with .8 seconds to play.
"It was a missed shot, so I had no choice but to go in there try to get a rebound for my team to get a win," Jackson said. "And I'm not missing."
Lee scored the first eight Mean Green points, and when Boyd entered the scoring column on a right-side drive, UNT took a 10-4 advantage. Lampkin scored inside, and Noble hit back-to-back shots to give North Texas a 10-point ciushion. Marshall then connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute to close to within 16-12.
The Herd hit another three to begin the second quarter to make it a one-point game. Jackson drove baseline for two, and long jumper by Boyd put UNT up, 20-15. A left wing 3-pointer by Destiny Brooks extended the lead to 25-19 before the Herd answered with a three of their own. Noble concluded the half with a deep shot from the left side for a 29-22 Mean Green advantage.
The offense for UNT was dismal during the third quarter as the team went 3-of-18 from the field, including 10 straight misses. The Mean Green made 4-of-6 from the line to hold on to a 39-38 advantage.
"The people that we didn't want to get loose late got loose for five (points)," Mitchell said. "Hopefully we can change that tomorrow. We toughed it out. Some things didn't go our way, and some things did."
