SAN MARCOS, Texas — A 30th-minute goal from junior Olivia Klein was all the Mean Green soccer team needed Sunday afternoon as they beat Texas State 1-0 on the road.
UNT (2-0) held the Bobcats to just two shots over the 90-minute match and neither were on target so they've still yet to allow a shot on goal through two matches.
"The defense played really hard today and managed to get the shutout," said keeper Kelsey Brann. "While we weren't playing our best, we still got the win due to the hardworking nature of the team and our ability to win games no matter what. It was a great day to win."
The Mean Green have now shutout their last four straight regular season opponents dating back to last season.
On the attack Sunday, North Texas picked up where it left off in their season-opener at LSU Alexandria where they attempted a single-game program record 67 shots and won 7-0.
They didn't quite reach that shot mark on Sunday against Texas State but still showed their offensive force with 22 attempts and putting six on goal.
Klein scored her goal off an assist from sophomore Michelle Gonzalez, who led last year's team in assists with six. It was Klein's ninth career goal and her first of the year.
Klein's goal was her lone shot on Sunday. The forward had eight against LSU Alexandria last week.
Sophomore Allie Byrd had two close opportunities to score on Sunday but both were denied by the Bobcats keeper.
Newcomer Taylor Tufts, who is playing her first real matches in almost two years, led the team on Sunday with five shot attempts.
Texas State, which plays in the Sun Belt Conference and had its championship season in the fall, were eliminated from the league tournament in the first round and finished the fall with a 4-9-1 record. Sunday was its first match since. Teams in leagues that competed in the fall this year, such as the Sun Belt, SEC, ACC and BIG 12 are allowed to play a handful of matches this spring before the NCAA Tournament.
With the win, UNT is now 9-0-0 all-time versus Texas State and head coach John Hedlund picked up his 360th career win.
UNT's next scheduled match will be its 2020-21 home opener on March 4 versus Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
