ATLANTA – The North Texas swimming and diving team overcame a week without practice due to the winter storm in the area to tie a program-best third place finish at the Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships. The teams' 468 points was the third-most they've scored in a championship meet since joining Conference USA before the 2013-2014 season.
Â
"If I was told last week during the historic snow storm that hit Texas and shut down our community for a week, that this team would finish third for only the second time since joining Conference USA, I would not have believed it," head coach Brittany Roth said. "Our team did the unimaginable this week, I could not believe how much fight this group has in them. I'm so grateful to be coaching this team."
Â
All-in-all throughout the three days in Atlanta, the Mean Green secured four medals, including a pair of individuals from senior Leigh Faires McGee who took second in the 200 free (1:48.17) and third in the 100 free (49.83). North Texas also picked up a bronze medal in both the 800 free relay (McGee, Vasquez, Farris and Walpole – 7:24.76) and the 400 free relay (Walpole, Vasquez, Farris and McGee – 3:23.44). The team also secured nine top-5 finishes throughout the 21-event meet.
Â
The North Texas divers made history on the final day by securing three spots in the A final for Platform Diving, the most in program history. Saylor Hawkins would lead the way securing fifth-place with a personal best score of 208.00, just 0.65 points off of the school record. Olivia Dollar (196.40) and Meghan Miller (194.90) would finish seventh and eighth respectively. Miller finished her Conference USA career with an appearance in the A final of all three diving events
Â
"I'm very proud of this team for doing an amazing job all week and showing great confidence in each event," diving coach Mark Murdock said. "Meghan finished her senior conference meet with three finals appearances. As a senior and captain, she has done so much fir this team and I'm proud of how strongly she was able to finish."
