SB Position Preview: Outfielders

As softball season approaches, North Texas will be looking to continue on what was a promising start to a prematurely ended 2020 campaign. The Mean Green were off to one of the best starts in program history when the COVID-19 pandemic brought an end to the season in March. After losing 10 players from the 2020 squad, the 2021 team will feature one more newcomer than returners and this is the final piece in a three-part series detailing who is back and who is new in each position group.
Â
Outfielders – 2 Returners, 6 Newcomers
Â
The North Texas outfield will feature many new faces as it looks to replace graduates Katie Clark, Hanna Rebar and Kenzie Young. The Mean Green return just two players from the 2020 squad, both of which are Utility players. Senior Tarah Hilton and junior Amarys Miller-Godsey will both see time in the outfield as Hilton is the only returner with outfield experience in Denton. Hilton appeared in 23 games for the Mean Green a year ago between the outfield, catcher and DP while Miller-Godsey only made a handful of appearances for North Texas with none coming in the outfield.
Â
The newcomers are highlighted by a pair of transfers in graduate-transfer Tuesday DerMargosian (Texas) and redshirt freshman Molly Rainey (UCF). DerMargosian comes to Denton after making 165 appearances in four years for the Longhorns, posting 49 hits and 56 runs scored. Rainey made just four appearances for the Golden Knights during last years' shortened campaign but was able to hit a home run during her first career at-bat.
Â
Four true freshmen will also see time in the outfield for the Mean Green. Lexi Cobb, Katy Truitt, Maia Wark and Kalei Christensen are all capable outfielders while Wark and Christensen can both see time at secondary positions. Cobb joins the Mean Green from Silver Lake, Kansas while Truitt, Wark and Christensen all hail from the state of Texas. Wark and Christensen were Travel Ball teammates with Texas Glory while Cobb played Travel Ball with Jaden Middlebrook, Mikayla Smith and Ashlyn Walker.
