DENTON – North Texas pushed 15th-ranked Oklahoma into overtimes periods Sunday at the Soccer and Track & Field Stadium but fell 4-3 for the first Mean Green loss of the 2021 season.
UNT (5-1-0) played with an advantage for the majority of the game as the Cowgirls (9-2-1) received a red card 12 minutes into the contest to force them to compete with one less player throughout the match.
OSU struck first in the 30th minute, but North Texas quickly countered with a goal by Madi Starrett, her first with the Mean Green.
Taylor Hunter came through in the 42nd minute for her second goal of the season to give the Mean Green a 2-1 edge. OSU tied things up in the 68th minute before Taylor Tufts connected three minutes later on her second goal of the year to take the lead back at 3-2.
An OSU penalty kick in the 77th minute knotted things at 3-all and brought the teams into overtime. Following a scoreless 10 minutes, North Texas and Oklahoma State continued into a second overtime where the Cowgirls found the back of the net in the 102nd minute for the win.
The Mean Green are back on the pitch March 21 at Southern Miss.
