Mean Green Down UTA on St. Patty's Day

DENTON – A cold wind couldn't deter the Mean Green on St. Patrick's Day as they downed UT Arlington 5-4 on Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium. The win extended the Mean Green's home win streak to 11 games and made North Texas 28-2 all-time at Lovelace Stadium under head coach Rodney DeLong.
The Mean Green will be in action again next Wednesday, March 24 when they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls.
"I thought it was gritty," DeLong said. "We didn't play great defense, conditions were tough but we had a good couple of days of practice. I felt like we looked a little more comfortable at the plate and UTA gave us a good shoot, we got it done and held on and won."
North Texas (13-6) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second after the teams traded scoreless first innings. Kalei Christensen started off the scoring after leading off with her first career triple before coming home on a wild pitch. A double from Rayna Lewis followed by a UTA (3-15, 0-3 Sun Belt) throwing error pushed the Mean Green ahead by a pair.
Molly Rainey would then drive in her team-leading 15th and 16th runs of the year on an inside-the-park home run to right center to make it 4-0. The Mavericks would strike for a run in the third off of North Texas starter GiGi Wall who finished the game with a no-decision after throwing 3.0 innings and allowing four hits with two strikeouts. Janie Worthington would pick up her third win of the year with an inning of relief in which she gave up a pair of runs on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.
After UTA cut into the lead in the fourth, the Mean Green would add their fifth run of the night on a throwing error by UTA that followed a walk and stolen base by Mikayla Smith and a single from Candain Callahan.
Hope Trautwein would pick up her third save on the season with 3.0 innings of relief only allowing one run on a pair of hits and striking out four. UTA would add a run in the fourth on a Mean Green error with the bases loaded before Trautwein would get a huge strikeout to strand the tying run at third and go on to finish the deal and seal the win.
